LaFonta Joins City And State Officials On Inaugural Flight

For Immediate Release
Tuesday, July 14, 2009
State Representative Juan LaFonta (D-96) flew with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and other City and State Officials on AeroMexico’s inaugural flight from New Orleans to Mexico City last Tuesday, July 7.
AeroMexico, the largest airline in Mexico, discontinued international flight service from New Orleans to Mexico shortly after Hurricane Katrina. However, with increased pressure from City and State Officials, AeroMexico will provide six weekly non-stop flights on Sunday through Friday between New Orleans and Mexico City, with convenient connecting service to San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
“This is one more important step in the rebuilding of New Orleans,” said LaFonta. “With Louis Armstrong International Airport offering international service, Louisiana businesses will grow, tourism numbers will increase, and healthcare accessibility will expand.”
According to Greater New Orleans Inc, the region’s economic development organization, economic ties between Central America and New Orleans are expanding. As the Hispanic population in New Orleans reaches a quarter of a million and the Honduran population tops 80,000, the market demand for a direct flight to Mexico City is undeniable.
“I congratulate City and State Officials, economic development groups and culture and tourism agencies for responding to the requests of their constituents,” said LaFonta. “We are all looking forward to developing a sister-city relationship with Mexico City.”
LaFonta represents District 96, which includes much of the Port of New Orleans area and parts of the French Quarter and Faubourg Marigny. He is the former Chairman of the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, and is a strong advocate for criminal justice, education, healthcare, and diversity.
