La Fonta: “It Is Time To Put Louisiana First, Gov. Jindal”
For Immediate Release
September 1, 2009
New Orleans, LA – State Representative Juan La Fonta (D- 96) publicly denounced Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal for refusing to accept $300 million appropriated by the Federal Government in the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act for a high-speed rail system that would revolutionize travel, reduce traffic, and enhance Hurricane evacuation methods in Southern Louisiana.
“In rejecting federal stimulus money for much-needed infrastructure projects, Governor Jindal has once again advanced his personal political agenda in spite of what the people of Louisiana need,” said LaFonta. “This is a missed opportunity to compound on the new Federal Government payment models to create jobs and vital infrastructure.
“Governor Jindal’s political grandstanding must stop,” said La Fonta. “My constituents and the people of Louisiana are disgusted by the governor’s irresponsible leadership and self-serving policies. It is time to put Louisiana first.”
The high-speed rail system, developed with funds from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, would provide transportation services between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Not only would the rail system reduce traffic and emissions, enhance public safety, and create jobs and infrastructure, but it would also provide a new hurricane evacuation method for southeastern Louisiana.
La Fonta represents District 96, which includes much of the Port of New Orleans area and parts of the French Quarter and Faubourg Marigny. He is the former Chairman of the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, and is a strong advocate for criminal justice, education, healthcare, and diversity.
